On its final push into Germany during the beginning of the year 1945, the Red Army relieved the mostly vacated concentration camp. Many of the few survivors left died in the following days through malnutrition, although they were receiving medical treatment. A couple of days after the liberation, first photos and reports were made available to the public all over the world. Since 1996 the 27th of January has been designated as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Germany and from 2006, was also adopted by the United Nations.
