You and your friends assume the roles of temporal agents who—via the process of tachyon insertion—assume the roles of anyone, anywhere, at any point in time. This time, you head to ancient Egypt, the land of the pharaohs, to investigate a theft in the Valley of the Kings.
Unravel a Pharaoh's Secret
In Under the Mask, your nemeses the Syaans have pillaged King Tut's tomb and stolen his funerary mask. This means that, unless you can find the iconic mask, time will change forever on November 29th, 1922 when Howard Carter discovers the tomb.
How do you solve a crime that took place millennia ago? You don't. You and your fellow temporal agents will once again seal yourselves in your caissons and insert your minds into receptacles in the appropriate time and place. You will gain control of these Egyptians and use their knowledge and access in order to locate King Tut's mask and restore it to its proper place.
Throughout Under the Mask, as with every T.I.M.E. Stories scenario, you conduct your investigations by moving through locations represented by sets of cards. You and your friends can spend time units to investigate the different cards, turning them over and encountering their text. You may find clues, you may find riddles, or you may find angry combatants.
Your Receptacles and the I.T.D.
At the beginning of Under the Mask, you slip into control of one of the game's four main receptacles. Each contributes a unique set of talents toward your investigation, and whether or not you can make the best use of your receptacle's talents will play a major part toward your eventual success or failure.
Also, because your receptacles are all so varied in their talents, it's up to you to work with your fellow agents to figure out how best to share the tasks before you. Your receptacles can only endure the tachyon insertion for a limited period, so you have to keep moving quickly if you hope to resolve the mystery before you return to your present.
Fortunately, in the event that your team's receptacles might not have all the skills or information you need to move swiftly from one clue to the next, the T.I.M.E. agency has supplied you with yet another tool. In Under the Mask, your team can gain access to a whole host of new receptacles via the instantaneous transfers enabled by your Instantaneous Transfer Device (I.T.D.).
This fantastic wasp-shaped device uses an extraordinary amount of energy and won't work on everyone you meet, but when it does work, your I.T.D. will allow you to change receptacles during the course of your adventure. And just as you must make good use of your starting receptacles' many talents, a judicious use of your I.T.D. will vastly increase your chances of success.
