In feudal Japan, killing a snake is bad luck, and ancient legends foretell a terrible curse to anyone who brings harm to even a single serpent. Chobei, the wealthy landlord of a rural village, learns just how true such superstitions can be, after he causes the death of a poor farmer living on his land, and enslaves the man's wife and beautiful daughter. For after he kills a snake the the farmer's wife tried to protect, Chobei is driven mad by their spirits and ruin is brought to his entire family, including his new daughter-in-law who exhibits reptilian scales and green skin! Nobuo Nakagawa directs. Two events cause a rich, small-town man to lose his grip on his sanity in this explosive horror movie from director Nobuo Nakagawa. First, he causes the death of a poor farmer. Then he kills a snake belonging to the deceased farmer's wife. It's not long before snake-themed hallucinations beset the wealthy man's conscience, and it becomes apparent that a curse has been put on him, leading to a bloody and tortuous struggle as he tries to return to normal life.
