Hit Z Road is the upcoming zombie road-trip game by acclaimed designer Martin Wallace. Fast-paced, fun, and morbidly kitschy, Hit Z Road allows you and up to three friends to travel through a zombie-filled deck of adventure cards, challenging you not only to survive the full journey from Chicago to L.A. but to be the survivor with the most victory points.

Part survival game, part horror story, Hit Z Road boasts tension and irony in equal measure. You set off on a road trip to L.A., only to find yourself caught in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. But that won't ruin your vacation!

In Hit Z Road, you'll fight zombie hordes. You'll scavenge for gas and bullets. You'll race your friends. And you'll see the American countryside… the darkened, tainted American countryside, littered with shambling undead, haunted carnivals, and plumes of toxic gas.

And if you can get past all of that? It's fun, armored tanks, and beach parties in sunny L.A.!

The Days Just Keep Getting Darker
Throughout Hit Z Road, your journeys are represented by the progress your group of survivors makes through multiple pairs of adventure cards. These are loaded with evocative (and often darkly comedic) artwork. And they are divided into three stages to ensure that as you draw nearer to L.A. you'll be confronted by an increasing level of difficulty.

Each round, you lay out several pairs of these cards and then encounter one of the pairs. First, you encounter and resolve the left-most card, gaining any resources it indicates and encountering any adventure-specific text. Then, if the card indicates any number of zombies, you must spend gas to outrun them or enter combat.

Survive the left-most card, and your reward is that you can continue to the second card! The whole process is then repeated as you encounter its icons, text, and zombies in the same order.

If an adventure card indicates that it's worth any victory points, you score it after you fully encounter it (meaning you don't flee the zombies in your van). These are important because it's not enough to just survive the trip to L.A.; at the end of the game, the real winner is the road-trip survivor with the most victory points!

If You Can't Outrun the Zombies, Be Sure to Outrun Your Friends
The travel adventures you'll enjoy in Hit Z Road aren't just full of zombies and excitement; they're also unique.

Because you shuffle each of the different stages of adventure cards at the beginning of the game, you're always encountering different pairs of adventures from game to game. This means that while you'll sometimes drive through towns where you can scavenge bullets before replenishing your gas canisters and stocking up on Ginger Flash soda, you will—at other times—be forced to battle seemingly endless hordes of zombies, only before losing one of your survivors to radiation.

This means your adventures in Hit Z Road always lead to different stories, and if you want to live to share those stories with the good people in L.A., you need to make sure you get to the right adventures. And this means that you might sometimes have to sacrifice your friends…

Every round begins with a critical auction in which you and your friends can bid your precious resources against the right to move up in turn order. Why toss out your valuable bullets and gasoline just to go first? Because when you go first, you get your choice of the adventures you'll encounter.

You'd probably rather go through the adventures that give you four gas, a victory point, and an additional survivor than the adventures that give you only two total resources and force you to fight nine zombies for a grand reward of... nada.

But getting to make that choice hinges upon bidding high at the right time. And learning how to play the auction is a critical component of your survival. In the end, when the zombie hordes are really starting to choke off all the good routes out of town, you're going to want to be faster than your friends.
